This is downtown Des Moines, from the Court Avenue entertainment district to the Historic East Village tucked between the State Capitol and the Des Moines River. It is the densest, most built-up part of the city, which means surface gas stations are scarce here. The land is too valuable for sprawling fuel canopies, so a lot of downtown drivers are paying garage rates and buying gas somewhere else entirely.

Because the core itself runs thin on pumps, the practical strategy is to fill up just outside it. Heading out toward the interstates or onto the arterials that ring downtown puts you near far more stations and far better competition than anything you will find between the office towers.

If you do need fuel right downtown, expect the convenience to cost you a little, the same way it does in any central business district. For real savings, the higher-volume stations a mile or two out along the main commuter routes are where the prices loosen up.
