Why Warehouse Gas Is Cheaper
Costco does not sell gas to make money on gas. Fuel is a loss leader designed to drive foot traffic into the warehouse. Sam's Club and BJ's operate on the same principle — the profit comes from what you buy inside.
Gas Quality: Top Tier Certification
A common concern is that cheap gas means low-quality gas. This is wrong. Costco gasoline is Top Tier certified, meeting a detergent additive standard developed by GM, BMW, Toyota, Honda, and Volkswagen. Use regular stations when Costco is significantly out of your way. The 15-25 cent savings evaporates on a 10-mile detour — at $4.00/gallon and 25 MPG, that round trip costs $1.60 in fuel alone.
A phone mount on the dash makes it easy to check station prices before committing to a route. And pulling up at the pump is a good time to check tire pressure — underinflated tires cost 3% in fuel economy, quietly eating into the savings you just earned.
