How they actually differ

Speed

On a typical mobile connection, Gas Price Check returns results in roughly 1 to 2 seconds after a ZIP entry. GasBuddy ships a heavier client because it supports more features. The trade-off is intentional: we ship less to load less. If your only goal is to find the cheapest pump near you, that speed difference matters.

Account requirement

Gas Price Check works without any signup. Type a ZIP, see the answer, leave. GasBuddy supports anonymous browsing for basic search but pushes you toward an account for features like saved stations, trip history, and Premium discounts. Whether that friction is worth it depends on whether you use those features.

Coverage

GasBuddy has been operating since 2000 and has built the largest crowdsourced gas price database in North America, roughly 150,000 stations across the US and Canada. Gas Price Check covers the US only with roughly 50,000 stations, focused on the major urban and suburban markets where most search demand lives. If you live in a rural area or travel into Canada regularly, GasBuddy is more likely to have your local data.

Data freshness

GasBuddy combines real-time crowdsourced reports with station feeds, so a price submitted minutes ago can appear in search results immediately. Gas Price Check refreshes each ZIP cache every 24 hours from a commercial price feed. For most consumers in non-volatile periods, the practical difference is small. During a sharp wholesale price move, GasBuddy will reflect the change at retail faster.

Pricing model

Both services are free to use for basic search. GasBuddy offers a Premium tier through the Pay with GasBuddy+ card at $9.99 per month or $99 per year, advertised as saving roughly 20 cents per gallon at participating stations and up to 22 cents at select retailers. Gas Price Check has one free tier with no upsell. Whether the Premium discount pays for itself depends on your monthly fuel spend.

Driver data and privacy

In January 2025, a federal class action was filed against Allstate and its subsidiary Arity alleging that the companies built one of the largest commercial driver- behavior databases by paying app developers, including GasBuddy, to embed Arity's tracking SDK in their consumer apps. The lawsuit cites geolocation, accelerometer, speed, and bearing data collected from app users. In March 2026, a federal judge allowed claims under the laws of 20 states to proceed; trial is scheduled for June 2026 (see our research write-up for case citations and what it means for app users). Gas Price Check does not embed third-party tracking SDKs, does not sell driver behavior data to insurance companies or data brokers, and does not require an account to use the search. These are different products with different business models, and that difference matters for users who value privacy.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gas Price Check actually faster than GasBuddy?
On mobile networks, Gas Price Check returns ZIP search results in roughly 1 to 2 seconds. GasBuddy historically loads more slowly because it includes a richer feature set, app-shell loading patterns, and more display advertising. Speed is a deliberate trade-off: we ship less to load less.
Why use Gas Price Check if GasBuddy has more features?
Different priorities. If you want loyalty rewards, the Pay-with-GasBuddy card, route integration, or community trip planning, GasBuddy is the right tool. If you want to type a ZIP code, see the cheapest stations, and leave, Gas Price Check is built for that single workflow with no friction.
Is Gas Price Check affiliated with GasBuddy?
No. Gas Price Check is an independent service. GasBuddy is a registered trademark of GasBuddy LLC. We use the name only to compare our service to theirs, which is permitted by US trademark law as nominative fair use.
Is Gas Price Check free?
Yes. Always free, one tier, no Premium upsell. The site is funded by affiliate partnerships (Insurify auto insurance, AAA Membership in 7 western states, Expedia hotel deals in tourism destinations, Rexing dash cams, and Amazon Associates product links) plus a Vercel-hosted display ad slot that loads after results render. No driver data is sold to any of these partners.
Does Gas Price Check sell my driving data?
No. Gas Price Check does not embed third-party tracking SDKs such as Arity or similar driver-behavior collectors, does not sell location or driving-pattern data to insurance companies or data brokers, and does not require an account to use the gas search. We use Vercel Web Analytics for aggregate site traffic patterns (a privacy-friendly analytics service that does not identify individual users) and run optional affiliate partnerships that only fire when a user clicks an outbound link.
Where does Gas Price Check get its data?
Station-level prices come from a continuously updated commercial gas price feed, refreshed every 24 hours per ZIP. Regional averages come from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). Driving distances come from Mapbox. Geocoding falls back across US Census Bureau, Nominatim, and zippopotam.us depending on which has data for a given ZIP.
