Elkton sits in the far northeastern corner of Maryland, the Cecil County seat, with Interstate 95 crossing just north of town and the Delaware line only a few miles east along US-40. That state line is the single most important fact about buying gas here.

Maryland's gas tax runs north of 46 cents a gallon, while Delaware's is about half that, around 23 cents, and Delaware has no sales tax on top of it. The practical result is that the pumps just over the line near Newark, Delaware can run meaningfully cheaper than what you see in Elkton itself, and plenty of Cecil County drivers time their fills for when they are heading east anyway.

That does not mean every Elkton station is a bad deal. Local competition along US-40 keeps the in-town corners reasonable, and if you are not crossing the line, US-40 is where you will find the most stations vying for the same traffic. But if your route takes you toward Delaware, it is worth waiting the few miles to cross before you fill.
