Gas Prices in Honolulu Today

Honolulu drivers are paying around $4.96 per gallon for regular unleaded as of mid-March 2026 — $1.24 above the national average of $3.72 and among the highest prices in the country outside California. Hawaii's extreme geographic isolation means every drop of fuel must be shipped across the Pacific, and the ongoing Iran conflict has made that already-expensive supply chain even costlier.

Why Honolulu Gas Is So Expensive

Hawaii is 2,400 miles from the nearest US mainland refinery. Every barrel of crude oil and every gallon of refined gasoline must travel by tanker ship across the Pacific, adding significant costs that mainland states never face.

The state does have one refinery — Par Pacific's facility at Campbell Industrial Park on Oahu's west side. But a single refinery serving an entire state creates a near-monopoly dynamic. When Par Pacific runs maintenance or has unplanned outages, there is no backup — the state relies entirely on imported refined product at premium prices.

Hawaii's state gas tax at 16 cents per gallon is one of the lowest in the nation, but the state also applies its general excise tax to fuel sales, adding effectively another 4.7% plus county surcharges. The true tax burden is higher than the headline number.

Where to Find the Cheapest Gas in Honolulu

On an island, options are limited. But prices vary across Oahu by 40-60 cents between the cheapest and most expensive stations.

Search by ZIP code:

  • Downtown Honolulu96813 — central city, moderate pricing
  • Ala Moana / Kakaako96814 — commercial district, decent station access
  • Waikiki96815 — tourist area premium, avoid filling up here if possible
  • Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam96818 — military base area, competitive nearby stations
  • Pearl City96782 — central Oahu suburb, often the best prices on the island
  • Kaneohe96744 — windward side, fewer stations, slightly higher prices
  • An affordable tire pressure gauge can improve your fuel economy by up to 3% — one of the easiest ways to save at the pump.
  • A phone mount makes it easy to navigate hands-free to the cheapest station nearby.

The Iran Conflict Hits Hawaii Hardest

The US-Iran conflict and Strait of Hormuz disruptions have pushed Brent crude from around $70 to over $110 per barrel. Nationally, prices surged 74 cents in a month — a 26.9% increase. For Hawaii, the impact is amplified by complete dependence on imported energy.

Roughly 20% of global oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Hawaii's Par Pacific refinery processes crude from multiple global suppliers, and higher crude prices translate almost directly into higher pump prices. Tanker shipping costs have also risen as fuel surcharges increase on maritime routes. Hawaii has no pipeline connections, no domestic crude production, and no alternative supply chain. When global markets spike, the islands absorb the full impact with zero buffer.

Costco: The Only Real Discount Option

Costco's Oahu locations — Iwilei near downtown and Hawaii Kai — are the primary discount fuel options, typically running 30-50 cents below the island average. In a $5.00/gallon environment, that saves $5-8 per fill-up. The trade-off is lines: 20-40 minute waits during peak hours. Regulars go on weekday mornings.

Fuel Economy Matters More Here

At nearly $5.00 per gallon, the difference between a 25 MPG and 35 MPG vehicle over 10,000 miles annually is roughly $570. Hawaii's prices make fuel efficiency a bigger factor in vehicle choice than any mainland market.
