New Jersey's gas tax was around 42 cents per gallon as of recent updates, having risen significantly since 2016 to fund the Transportation Trust Fund. The state operates several refineries (Bayway, Linden, Phillips 66) which historically meant cheaper prices, but recent refinery closures have shifted the balance toward pipeline and tanker imports. New Jersey is also one of two states (Oregon being the other) where self-service is restricted, which adds a small per-gallon labor cost. Costco, Sam's Club, BJ's Wholesale, Wawa, and QuickChek lead on value.
