How Walmart fuel pricing works
Walmart operates a hybrid fuel-retail strategy. Some Supercenter parking lots have Walmart-branded fuel stations supplied through Walmart's own commercial fuel network. Others have Murphy USA or Murphy Express stations under a long-running co-location agreement that places Murphy pumps in Walmart parking lots in exchange for the high-traffic real estate. Pricing at both is positioned aggressively low relative to nearby competitors, which is the core driver of the strategy: cheap fuel pulls drivers into the parking lot, and the in-store visit captures the higher margin.
The Walmart+ fuel discount
Walmart+ membership costs $98 per year (or $12.95 monthly). The fuel benefit applies at three different rates depending on the station and state. Members get up to 10 cents per gallon off at participating Exxon and Mobil stations (5 cents in Alabama and Oklahoma due to state pricing law). Walmart-branded fuel and Murphy USA stations offer 5 to 10 cents off per gallon depending on local laws. Sam's Club Plus members get member fuel pricing on top of any Walmart+ benefits at Sam's Club locations. The Exxon and Mobil partnership is particularly valuable because both brands are Top Tier Detergent Gasoline certified, meaning members get savings and a premium additive package.
For a driver consuming 80 gallons per month (about 12,000 miles per year at average fuel economy) at the 10 cent discount tier, the discount returns $96 per year, almost exactly covering the $98 membership cost on fuel savings alone. Higher-volume drivers and households with multiple vehicles unlock the membership cost faster. Anyone using non-fuel Walmart+ benefits (grocery delivery, Paramount+ subscription, early access to deals) gets the rest of the value on top.
Walmart fuel vs Costco, Sam's Club, and Murphy USA
Costco fuel typically prices 12 to 25 cents below nearby retail before any membership cost is considered. Sam's Club fuel sits between Costco and standard retail, with Plus members getting an additional 5 cents per gallon stacked on top. Walmart-branded fuel is closer in spirit to Murphy USA pricing: low but not necessarily club-low. The advantage of Walmart+ over the warehouse clubs is the broader station network (the Murphy USA network, including the Murphy USA, Murphy Express, and QuickChek brands, exceeds 1,750 locations nationwide) and the integration with non-fuel benefits.
Top Tier status and fuel quality
Walmart-branded fuel and Murphy USA are not listed on the Top Tier Detergent Gasoline certified-brands list at toptiergas.com. Modern engines designed for regular unleaded fuel will run fine on either, but drivers who want Top Tier additives in their tank should use the Walmart+ discount at participating Exxon and Mobil locations instead, both of which are Top Tier certified.
